MACHU PICCHU | PERU TRAVEL GUIDE

This post is super special for me. Machu Picchu was the number one destination on my wish list and having visited it for me has been a dream. I will try to tell you everything we lived, everything we learned, tips etc.
One of the things that I thought about on this trip was if I may have Machu Picchu so idealized that being there might be a bit disappointed. I have to say that it was not like that at all. It is a place where everyone should be once in their life, not only because of the ruins and history of the Incas Andean civilization and their fantastic way of building, but also because of the environment, the place it is located. I had never seen mountains of that magnitude and beauty, ever in my life. When you are in the citadel you can see the mountains around even higher but you are already high, and if you look down, you see the Uruamba River in the distance, I freaked out with the height of these mountains. They are also green from bottom to top because Machu Picchu is at the doors of the Amazonas Rainforest and it is super green, I couldn't believed that.

I had the idea that climbing to Machu Picchu was a challenge, that the climb to the citadel was somewhat a complicated hiking and even more because of the altitude sickness risk.
Well It does not have to be this way. There are several ways to go up, by the4 days  Inca route, the one-day Inca route or by bus from Aguascalientes. The bus leaves you at the Citadel entrance and you walk in nicely without having to do a previous hike. The bus ticket is taken out at a box office in the town, you can not buy it online. We took it out the day before but buying it on the day there is usually not a problem, there are about 15 buses going up and down non stop.

It is important to know that you have to book well in advance the general tickets because there is a maximum number of visitors per day in two turns. You can book your tickets online on  the Ministry of Culture website: www.machupicchu.gob.pe, which in some browsers does not work well at times. The price of the general entrance to the citadel is aabout €40.

Be careful! Do not forget to bring the tickets and the passport with you.

We booked four months before, and we had no problem with the general entrance, but we had it to book the Wayna Picchu hike.
You can also book two hukes inside  the complex: Hike to Wayna Picchu, which is the high mountain that appears at the bottom of the typical photo and the hike to the Machu Picchu mountain. The difference is that the Wayna Picchu is more complicated because it is a narrow sloped path but it takes less time to reach the top, and the Machu Picchu mountain is a wider and less sloped path but it takes longer.
We get the Wayna Picchu ticket on the same website, which costs, in pack with the general admission, about € 55. There are two turns of 200 people each, 400 people in total per day and we did not find places for the 10 a.m. turn so we went up early and took the 7 a.m hike, which I thanked later.

I was not sure I could hike it. I had read that it was hard, and took more or less 1h to reach the top and altitude sickness was a risk. I was lucky that altitude sickness did not appeared while climbing the Wayna Picchu, it comes later in the  citadel visit though... but at least I could hike nicely. Actually I  I chewed coca leaf to prevent it and get more oxygen to the brain, but I did not chewed much.
To me the rise was not so difficult, perhaps because I expected it much worse. It is true that it is hard because height makes you get more tired but I found it quite bearable and it took us less than 1 hour to go up (and that I am not used to hike or anything, although I usually train). It is worth climbing because the view is spectacular and the experience of just the citadel for me is quite short. We enjoy much more the experience going up and doing the common visit after.

We took a guide for the visit and we loved it, I recommend it because he, at least ours, explained everything so good and we were thilled because we understood better the place and its history.

To take the typical photo you have to climb to an upper area where the guard house is. This climb was worse for me than the Wayna Picchu, I do not know if it was because it was sunny, because I was not expecting it or just that I was already tired, all added to the horrible headache I had because of the height. But it was very worth it, we were about not to go up because it was very typical, but I do not regret it, the view is the best and it stays in the memory burned. Beautiful and spectacular it is.

Another thing that surprised us is that we thought there were going to be a lot of people but it is so big, so we weren't overwhelm, and the earlier the less people. Then at 11-12 a.m it is the most crowded.

The look: I went in jeans and short sleeves and had a little warmth. If you are going to do a route like we wear mountain shoes, I appreciated it, otherwise it would not have gone so well, but if you only visit the citadel it is not necessary, with a sports shoe or a comfortable shoe, it is a tour of the ruins quite simple.
