ARCHITECTURE | JEWISH MUSEUM BERLIN

This museum is an extension of the Berlin Museum by the architect Daniel Libeskind opened in 1999. I have studied it thousands times as an example of narrative architecture. The collection it contains is about the daily life of the Jews, but the interesting thing  (for me) is what the building say. Everything is a continued metaphor. Libeskind makes references to what the Jewish people lived with his architecture. The first thing you see is that the access to the new building is made by a stairway straight to a the basement. There begins the visit. With this, the architect wanted to show that the history of Berlin and the Jewish people are independent.

First of all we had breakfast at the Berlin Museum Cafe. Really nice in my oppinion. With a huge lamps pending on the cealing or on the walls. But of course, no wifi...

The basement some messy corridors going to each part of the museum. The roof has bursts of light that is supposed to show the way to follow. I din't find this place that difficult to orientate. One leads yo to the Holocaust Tower. I was told it was really overwhelming but I did not believe that. It is a tall concrete tower, empty, with an acute angle and with a scar of light at the top. Nothing more, it's just that. You cant imagine the feeling I had being there. An unheated, with a terrible cold and the door closed. Everything was in darkness, and you see the peaked corner even darker and you can barely see what is there. You hear the street noise and the only contact with the outside world is there scar at the top. I'm not a particularly claustrophobic person but I had to run out of that place.

The Garden of Exile was closed but it is something like the Holocaust Memorial by Peter Eisenman. A grid of large concrete blocks with  plants hanging from the top and the ground totally uneven to make you feel uncomfortable and disoriented.

To raise the rest of the museum you take a stairs that go nowhere, they end on a white wall. On your way up you have some beams crossing above your head and to go into the rooms you have to turn left before reaching the end of the stairs.

The main floor consists of two lines, one in with a lightning shape, the museum, and the other just straight. The intersections are nothing nothing, the emptys. Concrete wall patios symbolizing the emptiness left by the Jews.

The facade is double. Inside the walls are white with elongated windows in different directions. Outside is metal with windows following the same scheme but exterior and interior do not have to match.
