Recently we were very lucky to be able to go to Lanzarote for five days. Actually we were three, because the flight schedules are very limited and did not allow us to use the travel days as other times.
I have never been in this island and I loved it. I fell in love with its landscapes and architecture. We rented an apartment in Costa Teguise, a very well known beach area that due to the circumstances was not in its full splendour, there were few people and the restaurants were not all open but anyway it is very pleasant and we enjoyed walking on the beach and having dinner there.
Although not everything was open in Covid, we were able to see quite a few things. Here are the spots I liked the most:

💖💖💖

💥Timanfaya National Park. We spent a whole morning there and it was one of my top spots on the island. We took the car and stopped first at the museum, where the history of the park and the island is explained and how the volcanic activity that made the landscape so different. The museum staff gave us a great guided tour, I am a big fan of volcanoes and I really enjoyed learning more about them. Afterwards we did the volcano route. You have to do it by bus and it goes through the different volcanoes of the park. You can't get off the bus, but it's worth the tour.

One of the things I liked most about the island is how present and integrated the architecture is. Many of the island spots were designed by the architect César Manrique. This was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. The interior of a volcanic tube has been fitted out, a hollow space created by the lava where the sea emerges and you can also see a species of white crabs that is unique in the world. It has become an event space that gives a lot of peace and harmony. I loved the place and I really enjoyed seeing the organic architecture that tries to blend in with nature to do as little damage as possible to the environment.

💥 Famara, a village in the north of the island, that has a beautiful beach. We ate at great restaurant there called El Risco and also the view was spectacular. The arrival by road was one of the most impressive of the trop: the sea on one side, the mountains on the other, fields full of yellow flowers and a rainbow.

This is a very impressive area of black rock cliffs. The sea crashes and the white foam contrasts with the volcanic rock. The landscape is very special, it gave me the feeling of being in a Lord of the Rings movie or in a Game of Thrones episode. The road has this giant dark brown rocks on the sides that Miki said they looked like huge pieces of Oreo biscuits.

💥Playas de Papagayo is a protected area with beautiful and very attractive beaches. To get there you have to pay an entrance fee (I don't remember the price but it wasn't expensive at all) and drive along sandy roads until you finally arrive. It is worth the trip because the beaches of fine white sand between rocks are very nice and pleasant.

💥 Cactus garden. I loved this garden with many varieties of cactus. It is like a botanical garden, also by César Manrique. For a cactus and architecture lover like me, it was an essential stop. The place has a very special atmosphere. I like the fact that you can see the ground floor from the top and there is also a bar with a little terrace over the garden, which we would have enjoyed if it hadn't been pouring with rain.

It is a green lagoon by the sea that has an intense colour that I have never seen before. Apparently it is due to the high sulphur content of the water and because it contains a specific algae that gives it this colour. It is in a beautiful setting and it is worth stopping the car for a walk around.

This was one of the places that had the greatest impact on me, and Miki almost had to drag me there after a day of non-stop, as I didn't have the strength to visit anything else. However, I loved it. It is a volcano where you can go inside and the good thing is that the trip is short and practically flat. There is an opening through which you can enter and see how the inside of a volcano is like. I enjoyed it a lot and I found it very curious.

💥Mirador del Rio: On the north of the island there is a little islet called La Graciosa, which I was recommended to go to but we didn't have the time. However, from this viewpoint built into the rock at the top of a cliff you can see the whole islet and it is spectacular. The viewpoint is by César Manrique and the inside is very nice. In normal times (not covid) there is a restaurant with a view.

💥 Teguise. We loved this inland village and although it doesn't have the charm of the coastal villages (which are ideal) Teguise is very pleasant to spend a nice afternoon, it is full of little shops and cafes. What took most our attention about the island is how well-kept the villages are. All the buildings are white on all five sides, including the roof, and the woodwork is painted in the same blue or green. This makes everything look very clean and tidy and the island mood is very calm. The white architecture also accentuates the contrast with the dark terrain. It is very special.

There are actually vineyards in many areas of the island, but this one is well known for its circular shapes. It is beautiful to see how the black landscape has these cones protected by circular constructions from which the vine plant emerges, standing out against the dark background. It is worth driving through the area and stopping to watch the scene. There are also several wineries where you can do a wine tasting, but we preferred not to try this experience this time, maybe another time.

I hope you enjoyed it. I highly recommend this island. I would dare to say that of all the islands I know in the Canary Islands, it is the most charming (although I only know those in the province of Las Palmas). We realised that travelling in times of covid, whenever possible, is feasible. We went with negative test, which we asked the whole flight when we landed in the Canary Islands and we were very comfortable on the island. We booked an apartment to not going to a hotel this time, we visited many outdoor places, the restaurants were only working on open on terraces and the truth is that we had no problem. I loved the experience, although we didn't see everything. We will have to come back.

And this was our rental apartment overlooking the sea, it was super nice.
